The Government of Maldives has ‘invited’ an Indian arms dealer’s company to construct an international airport in the country.
Tourism Ministry had proposed a ‘build, own, transfer’ model whereby the company will run the airport for a period of 50 years. After the conclusion of the 50-year period, the airport has to be handed over to the Government.
Olialia Inida, a global firm owned by billionaire Abhishek Verma, has signed an MOU to build an international airport in the Maldives. The Government of Maldives has sanctioned a huge lagoon to the company for this purpose. The designated water body is reported to be far away from the capital city Male, and hence needed an international airport.
According to sources, the planned airport would be named Olialia International Airport for a minimum period of 10 years. The Maldivian media has reported that the island nation’s government had invited billionaire Abhishek Verma’s firm Olialia to construct the airport by issuing an ‘invitation letter’.
The letter is being reported to be addressed to Anca Verma, and signed by the Maldives’ Tourism Minister Moosa Zameer. For the uninitiated, Anca Verma, wife of billionaire Abhishek Verma, is a former Miss Universe Romania. She is currently working along her husband as the Chairperson of Olialia International Airport project.
According to the company representatives, the airport will be built upon the ‘build, own and transfer’ model, which means that Olialia build and run the airport of 50 years, after which the operations and management would be handed over to the Government of Maldives.
